Obituary: Tribute to Peter McGuire

Relatives of a Middleton man who was killed when his horse became "agitated" in transit and kicked him in the head have paid tribute to the "loving" family man.

Peter McGuire, 51, was fatally injured when he stopped his vehicle to try to calm the horse.

Mr McGuire's wife was also hurt as she tried to calm the animal in Blackburn Road, Edenfield, on Wednesday.

The father of two, of Middleton, Greater Manchester, will be "sadly missed", relatives said in a statement.

Mr MrGuire's family said: "Peter was married to his wife Marie for 27 years and had a son and a daughter who he loved dearly.

"He was an active member of the Bolton and District Riding Club, with horse riding being a family hobby for the past eight years.

"Peter has been taken from us in such sudden and tragic circumstances and will be sadly missed by his family, friends and horse community."

The horse was later taken to the Croft Top Equestrian Centre in Accrington, where it is still being cared for.

Centre owner Ken Holden, said: "The horse is fine. It is no problem whatsoever. It will remain here indefinitely until the family get in touch."

He said he did not think the horse was dangerous.

"You can never be certain though but this is a very rare occurrence," Mr Holden said.

"I have been brought up with horses all my life and this is the first time I have ever known of a fatality to happen like this."
