Salary pledge

Manchester Police and Crime Commissioner candidate Steven Woolfe has pledged to take only half the salary if elected.

“It is my understanding that the other candidates for this role intend taking the £100,000 annual salary but I will not do so,” said Mr Woolfe, who is contesting the post for UKIP.

“It is, of course, a very important high powered job but I am standing for election so that I can make a difference to policing on the streets of our city and not for the money.

“I would use the other half of the salary to pay for roles to help with my mission to provide the best possible police service,” said the 45-year-old lawyer.

“We all know that budget cuts are the order of the day and very careful decisions will have to be made. I am prepared to show the way and make an immediate annual saving of £50,000 as every penny counts.

"I grew up in this great city and I believe that local community policing, strong action on gangs, knife crime, anti–social behaviour and proper sentencing of convicted criminals is the agenda that should be pursued.
