Volcano visitor at Matthew Moss!

Date published: 30 October 2012

Geography lessons learners have been looking at tectonics and how earthquakes and volcanoes occur. Learners carried out their own enquiries and were asked to present out findings as an informative poster, similar to what you might expect to find in an exhibition in a museum. Learners also had individual interviews with experts who assessed their knowledge and understanding of plate tectonics.

Mrs Russell, an expert biologist, was very impressed with the depth of knowledge that some leathers had acquired. Aisha Ahmed's poster highlights the complexity of the research which learners undertook.

To assist learners with their research we also had a visit from Bill who is a researcher of geology and vulcanology working at Leeds University. Chelsea Wren in Year 10 has described the visit.

Chelsea Wren said: "Bill came into our lesson to talk about earthquakes and the effects that the recent one in New Zealand had had on the surrounding area.

"He talked about the dangers of living close to a high cliff edge. Building things close to the edge of a cliff is especially dangerous in areas at risk of landslides.

"We saw one example where the earthquake had literally teared a house in half. Also, the earthquake sent huge rocks hurtling through the air, completely destroying almost everything in their paths. We saw a photo of one that weighed about 5 tons, the same as 5 cars!"
