Youngsters lay foundations for construction careers

Date published: 22 October 2012

A group of 12 young people from around the borough have taken an important first step to a career in the construction industry by successfully completing an introductory course.

Get into Construction was run by Carillion, the main contractor on Rochdale’s Building Schools for the Future project, and youth charity The Prince’s Trust, which is dedicated to helping to change young lives.

12 trainees took part in the programme and impressed organisers with their commitment and enthusiasm as they received expert guidance in areas including bricklaying, joinery, dry lining and ceiling fixing.

After an initial two weeks of training all the young people went on to work with specialist subcontractors to enhance both their site experience and their construction skills as well as giving them the chance to work alongside potential employers.

In addition, they successfully studied Health and Safety issues for their Construction Skills Certification Scheme card which will enable them to work on construction sites.

The group were rewarded for their efforts with certificates presented by the Mayor of Rochdale, Councillor James Gartside, at a special ceremony at Manchester Golf Club in Middleton.

The Mayor said: “These young people deserve great credit for successfully completing the course which will hopefully lead to careers in the construction industry.

“Praise is also due to all those responsible for organising the project which is an excellent initiative.”

Peggy Desforges, of The Prince’s Trust, said: “We recognise that young people need support and guidance to help them into work at a time when many people are out of employment. Programmes like the Get into Construction course give participants confidence and motivation and also the skills to help them get into work at this tough time.”
