Award-winning cadets congratulated by Lord Lieutenant

Date published: 19 October 2012

Rochdale’s award-winning sea cadet unit, T.S Frobisher II were congratulated on their achievements, during a visit from the Lord Lieutenant of Manchester this month.

Lord Lt Warren Smith was joined by the Mayor and Mayoress of Rochdale for the visit, which saw the unit presented with a plaque and a long-serving officer rewarded.

T.S Frobisher II received a prestigious Burgee for 2012 at the bi-annual Royal Naval Parade - awarded for the quality of their development, training and safety.

They also achieved success in a District Swimming Competition and attended a tri-cadet services competition at the weekend.

The Lord Lieutenant has a close relationship with the sea cadet movement and requested to visit Rochdale as part of a series of visits to all of North East Lancashire’s sea cadet units.

His visit to Rochdale saw him inspecting the 35 cadets in attendance along with the Mayor and Mayoress, and being given a tour of the unit.

S/Lt Viv Buckett, commanding officer of the unit, felt that the visit went well.

“The visit was a success with both the Lord Lieutenant and the Mayor congratulating the cadets on their achievements,” she said.

Petty Officer John Buckett was also presented with a long service award, having served as a full Petty Officer for 12 years.

Rochdale - which has been in operation since 1942 - is now looking for a junior sea cadet instructor to allow those aged between 10 and 12 to join the unit too.

S/Lt Buckett said: “The unit welcomes new members as cadets and is also in need of adult volunteers, instructors and committee members.

“Being a sea cadet volunteer is rewarding, seeing our cadet blossom into well-adjusted adults.

“Many of our cadets are serving members of the armed forces and often return to the unit to parade with us or provide training support.”

The unit can be contacted at Rochdale Sea Cadets (T.S Frobisher II), Greenbank Road, Rochdale, or tel: 01706 356656 or 07985 297129.

Parades on Tuesday and Friday evenings.
