Murder investigation launched

Date published: 18 October 2012

A murder investigation has been launched following the death of a man in Rochdale.

At about 5.10pm on Sunday 14 October 2012, police were called to a house on Willows Lane, Milnrow, following reports of a concern for the welfare of the 84-year-old man who lived at the house.

Officers attended and the man, Vincent Kershaw, was found dead.

A home office post mortem concluded that he died from head injuries.

Mr Kershaw was last seen alive on Thursday 4 October 2012 and police are keen to trace his movements during the day.

Detective Inspector Iain Butler from the Major Incident Team said: “A team of officers are still at the scene and we are working on establishing a motive. There are a number of lines of inquiry and at this stage, we cannot rule out robbery.

“Mr Kershaw was known to carry large quantities of cash when he was out and when his body was examined, there was no sign of his wallet.

“We are keen to piece together Mr Kershaw’s final movements. We know that Vinny travelled by bus and taxi in Rochdale and Shaw in Oldham. He was seen collecting his pension at Milnrow Post Office on Dale Street at 10.00am on Thursday 4 October and was also seen buying groceries at Tesco Express on Dale Street at 1pm. If anyone saw Mr Kershaw that day and has any information as to his movements leading up to the discovery of his body on 14 October, please phone police.

“The information you have, no matter how insignificant you may think it is, may be vital in this investigation.”

Detective Chief Inspector Alistair Mallen from Rochdale CID said: “Understandably, the death of Mr Kershaw has caused concern amongst the community but I can reassure residents that we are doing all we can to establish what has happened.

“There are increased police patrols in the area and if you have any concerns, please approach your local officer.

“I would also like to urge all members of the community, particularly the elderly and vulnerable, not to openly display personal possessions and remain vigilant.”

Anyone with information should phone police on 0161 856 2027 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
