Two people injured in chip pan fire
Date published: 16 October 2012
Two people were taken to hospital after a chip pan fire at a house in Rochdale.
Crews from Rochdale Fire Station were called to Newark Road, Syke, at 11.50am on Monday 15 October.
A smoke alarm fitted in the property alerted the residents to the fire, which started as a result of a chip pan placed too close to a set of curtains in the kitchen of a semi-detached house.
Firefighters put out the blaze before carrying out a Home Safety Check.
A 16-year-old girl was treated at the scene by fire service trauma technicians for burns to her hands and given oxygen therapy, while a 33-year-old woman suffering from the effects of smoke inhalation was also given oxygen therapy.
Both were taken to hospital for further treatment before being discharged later in the day.
Chair of Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Authority, Councillor David Acton said: "It only takes a few seconds for a serious fire to start so remember to never leave cooking unattended.
"Chip pans can be fatal so we would advise anyone with a chip pan to swap it for an electric deep fat fryer which is much safer. Any kind of pan can set alight but it's easy to avoid by not leaving it unattended.
"If a fire does occur, a working smoke alarm could save you vital seconds to save yourself and your property."
