Man hit over head during attempted robbery
Date published: 02 October 2012
Three masked men tried to raid a working men's club in Middleton but were forced away by members.
At about 11.40pm on Sunday 30 September 2012, two of the offenders burst into the Boarshaw Working Men's Club on Dixon Street.
They made demands for cash and one of them tried to pull away the CCTV recorder, damaging it.
The members then tried to force this man out with a chair and a fight started. The other offender, who was at the bar, joined in.
The pair were forced out and they ran off, with a third offender.
Nothing was stolen but one man was hit over the head with a crow bar.
The offenders were wearing balaclavas. The man who went behind the bar is described as being white and in his late teens.
The man who damaged the CCTV was in his late teens of slim build, and about 5ft 7in to 5ft 9in tall.
The third man was in his late teens.
Detective Constable David Read said: "Club members fought back against the robbers who tried to steal cash, and as a result one man was hit to the head.
"I would appeal to anyone who has information about this incident to call us as soon as possible.
"There may be members of the public who saw where the offenders ran away too."
Anyone with any information is asked to call police on 0161 856 4644 or call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
