Youngsters enjoy a healthy kebab

Date published: 28 September 2012

Pupils at Woodland Primary School, Heywood have been enjoying a very different type of kebab - fruit kebabs! The taste session is part of a scheme to promote healthy living.

The council’s Health Improvement team is working with the school’s local Harrisons Supermarket on the Darnhill Estate in Heywood to support the NHS’ Change4Life campaign.

As part of the scheme, taste sessions were held at the school’s Holiday Club with the store providing the fruit for both events.

Anna Dean, School Nutrition Advisor for the council, showed the pupils how to make the fruit kebabs before giving them the chance to discover how good healthy food can taste. All the children enjoyed the sessions and took Change4Life recipes and information home with them.

Harrisons Supermarket, Heywood is one of four shops across the borough which has signed up to the Change4Life retailer project. Managed and promoted by the council’s Health Improvement team, the scheme aims to improve fruit and vegetable sales within participating stores by ensuring quality, range and freshness of the produce, while promoting their availability locally.

The project also links in with Five Ways to Wellbeing - a campaign that will be launched across the borough later this year to encourage healthy lifestyles for people of all ages.
