Open Darts Competition calls on local players to step up to the oche!

Date published: 25 September 2012

Calling all darts players. Dust off those arrows and head down to Sudden Social Club on Sunday October 21. You could leave with the top £350 cash prize as this new Open Darts Competition gets underway.

The competition looks set to take the local darts scene by storm and organiser Mark Airey, who admits to being “passionate” about his sport, is keen to attract new players into the sport as well as trying to persuade those men and women who maybe haven’t played for a few years, to dust off those old arrows and step up to the oche again.

“There are about 30 local pubs and clubs where darts matches are played regularly,” says Mark. “And we are hoping that this competition really draws in our excellent local players and becomes a permanent fixture in the darts calendar.”

The competition is open to both men and women and the top eight players will all get a share of the £600 cash pot.

Entry is £7.00 on the day but if you pre-register, it is only £5.00. Sandwiches and light refreshments will be available and it looks set to be a great day’s entertainment. The doors open at 11.30 am and registration continues until 12.45. Players step up the oche at 1.15pm sharp.

Whether or not you want to take part in the competition or just watch an entertaining afternoon of quality darts in great company, Sudden Social Club looks set to be a great place to be on the day of the competition. You will be able to meet up and chat with local players and find out more about the local darts scene.

In the past, Rochdale has produced some world class players and in 1964, Ray Hatton made it to the World Championship. Sadly, Ray died only last year at the age of 79.

Despite the big prize money associated with the sport at national and international level, darts remains perhaps the cheapest and most accessible sport to take up, £15 - £20 will buy you a reasonable set of arrows and clubs are usually anxious to welcome new players.

Darts evenings, usually held down at your local pub and club are very sociable events with both men and ladies team playing in one of several local leagues. Refreshments are often laid on and it is a great way to make friends of all ages.
