Rochdale Environmental Action Group has applied to Rochdale Council to adopt the open space on Tweedale Street, in front of Castlemere Community Centre.
The Group is working with the businesses to raise awareness about the importance of "Keeping Rochdale Tidy".
A spokesman for the Group said: "There is improvement in the environment in the area but customers coming from outside the area for the food have to be educated about keeping the area clean.
"We are thankful to businesses, residents and volunteers who have been supporting us in our campaign. Special thanks to the Environmental Management for providing litter picks, gloves, plastic bags and support for removal of the bags.
"We have designed posters and distributed leaflets in the area. The response is very positive and now people are taking responsibility to clean outside their own houses and businesses.
"Our object is that everyone living in the area should be proud of living in the area and the campaign is gaining momentum."
Rochdale Environmental Action Group is now moving to the Deeplish area to clean on alternative weeks in Milkstone & Deeplish.
