Testing times for delayed Metrolink line
Date published: 20 September 2012
Trams will soon be running between Rochdale abd Oldham as Metrolink bosses test the line — but concern is growing over the start date of the service.
Tracks are in place and overhead lines have been electrified on the route which will see trams go through Milnrow, Shaw and Derker in Oldham.
Metrolink bosses originally planned a launch in the autumn, but now believe it could be pushed into 2013.
Peter Dawson, secretary of STORM (Support The Oldham Rochdale Manchester lines group), said he doubts the line will open this year.
“One can only be staggered at missing a huge opportunity - when the rail service is depleted between 27 October and 4 November and then giving up on pre-Christmas traffic,” he said.
After tests are complete, driver training will be the final step before the line opens.
Philip Purdy, TfGM’s Metrolink director, said: “Construction of the line between Oldham and Rochdale is largely complete and we’re moving into the testing and commissioning phase. People are likely to see a lot of activity on the line in the coming months.
“This phase of the project is incredibly important and, together with driver training, will go a long way to determining exactly when the line can open for service.”
