Stephen Hall speaks of his key role at the Olympic Games

Littleborough-based Stephen Hall has spoken of his pride after undertaking a crucial role at the Olympic Games this summer.

Temporarily trading in his day job as a systems engineer, Stephen became a National Technical Official in the sailing events. Within this role, he provided fundamental behind-the-scenes support, critical to the successful organisation of the sailing events and ensuring the safety of the Olympians.

Stephen’s interest in sailing began seven years ago, when he was working part-time and volunteering at Hollingworth Lake Water Activity Centre. He was subsequently offered the formal role of Course Safety Leader. Leading a team of eight, Stephen was responsible for the safety of the men’s Laser Standard and women’s Laser Radial sailors, relaying information between race officers and the team and ensuring that each member understood their role.

Commenting on the experience, Stephenl said: “It was an honour and a privilege to be working at this event. It took four years of hard work to achieve, but it was definitely worth it.

"I really enjoyed my time watching the sailing, and of course keeping the waters safe.

"London 2012 was a fantastic experience for the whole country and it was wonderful to be given a hands-on role doing something that I am so passionate about.”

Selected after a three-year formal, nationwide selection process, which was overseen by both the Event Appointments Committee of the RYA, the national body for boating, as well as the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG). It was also endorsed by The International Sailing Federation also endorsed, a significant achievement for Stephen.
