Peace campaigner joining walk as part of Peace Festival

Date published: 10 September 2012

Local peace campaigner, Philip Gilligan, from Littleborough, is celebrating his full recovery from open heart surgery last summer with a sponsored peace walk along the 28 kilometre (17 miles) Cown Edge Way on Sunday 23 September 2012. He is raising funds for Greater Manchester and District Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament.

The Peace Walk is part of the annual Manchester Peace Festival organised by local peace groups and artists from all parts of Greater Manchester. The festival will begin at 12 noon on 21 September with an event hosted by Musicians without Borders and Mayors for Peace in Albert Square, Manchester that will include one minute’s silence for all those who have been killed in wars, followed by music and poetry. It will close with a finale concert with Sarah Gillespie at the Night & Day Cafe, Oldham St, Manchester on 6 October.

Philip Gilligan said: “The Peace Festival is a broad, non-partisan celebration of peace and justice which aims to raise awareness about threats to peace locally and globally.

"This year the festival is bigger than ever and I am delighted to be well enough recovered from last year’s surgery to be able to play a full part in it.
