Touched by the warmth and generosity of Rochdale people

Volunteer members of Rochdale Foodbank enjoyed a productive two days at the last weekend. They were able to give out information to hundreds of visitors in warm and sunny conditions.

Project Manager, Iain Wight, said: “We were really touched by the warmth and generosity of Rochdale people. This is the heart of this charity, local people helping local people who have a need”.

The charity collected around 235 kgs of food, which will be around 1/8 of the starting stock level.

“All the experience around the UK (over 240 other foodbanks) suggests that demand will be very high. We don’t want to have to turn families away because we don’t have enough food”, Mr Wight added, “so we will be collecting a lot more over the next month – hopefully from church and school harvest offerings – and at supermarket foyers. We need over 2 tonnes to start, and then regular monthly collections.”

There will be a Food Collection Point at 142A Drake Street on Saturday 15 September from 10.00am -12noon, if anyone wants to drop off a bag of food.

The charity also collected £70 in gifts at the weekend.

Fund-raising coordinator for Rochdale Foodbank, Gemma Jackson , commented: “ We have a super group of volunteers, but the project still needs money to run, so any financial gifts are very welcome. If any Rochdale business would like to sponsor us, we would love to hear from them.”

She added that there would be a series of events during the autumn to raise funds for the charity.
