Is Danczuk wise to demand repayment of donations?
Date published: 25 August 2012
Following the conviction of corrupt Polly Peck tycoon Asil Nadir, who gave almost £500,000 to the Conservative Party, Rochdale Labour MP Simon Danczuk has written to Conservative co-chairman Baroness Warsi to demand the party hands the Asil Nadir cash back. He wrote: ‘The conviction of Asil Nadir raises the matter of his donations to the Conservative Party.' And on Twitter: "'...are the Tories technically in receipt of stolen cash?' Good question!"
That Mr Danczuk should feel emboldened enough to send such a letter is surprising given local criticism of donations by his now defunct company to his own constituency party.
Mr Danczuk was formerly a director and major shareholder of Urban Visions Limited, that traded as Vision Twentyone, that went into liquidation in June 2011. The company was wound up owing £222,000 to creditors, including £113,140 to HM Revenue and Customs.
For the absence of any doubt, it is not suggested that Mr Danczuk did anything illegal, just questioning the wisdom of demanding the Conservatives repay donations whilst he remains silent in the face of questions as to whether it was acceptable for his company to be donating tens of thousands of pounds in cash and services to Rochdale Labour Party whilst not paying debts, including well over £100,000 of taxpayers money.
