John Peers Hair Studio on South Parade has shut down.
As a long established previously successful business, of 25 years standing, the news came as a shock to clients and staff.
Just two weeks ago the hair studio won 'Best Long Serving Business' at the Rochdale Town Centre Business Awards.
However, like many in town, the business has been struggling due to the poor economic climate.
In 2010, retail guru Mary Portas took on the challenge of trying to breathe new life into a once thriving business that had lost its way.
Ms Portas transformed the John Peers Hair Studio from a "stuck in the 80s" salon to a pioneering hairdresser with the innovative concept of fashion hair - affordable, stylish looks for anyone.
Two years on it has not proved enough to save the business.
John said: "I am very sad to announce that John Peers Hair Studio and Academy today closes for business.
"I thank all our team for their great efforts and our superb clients for being so loyal and supportive throughout our 25 years in town.
"John Peers is going to continue to cut and colour hair; now in the comfort of your own home, 7 days a week."
Wife Nikki added: "Sincere thanks to everybody that we have worked with too over these years; we won't forget any of you.
"We have tried so extremely hard over these past few years and have fought extremely hard until this sad end."
Fellow town centre hairdresser Greg Couzens said: "So sad for John and the team, so sad for Rochdale, so sad for the hairdressing industry."
