Corrie stars join in the fun at Rochdale Leisure Centre‏

Date published: 07 July 2012

The region’s Olympic celebrations continued in style today (Saturday 7 July) with a star-studded open day at the newly opened Rochdale Leisure Centre.

Coronation Street actors Debbie Rush (Anna Windass) and Sam Aston (Chesney) were guests at the event, and signed autographs for the crowds within the centre’s atrium.

A full programme of sport taster sessions were available free of charge to the public from 10.00am onwards, and fitness fans of all ages were able to take part in mountain biking, street dance, trampoline, basketball, Zumba and much more.

Those less energetic were able to join in with arts and crafts, face painting, henna art and lantern making.

There was also a free prize draw with prizes including Olympic football tickets, as well as goody bags and spot prizes throughout the day.

Today’s open day was the first major event to be held at the £10.8 million centre on Entwisle Road which boasts swimming pools, sports hall, gym, exercise studios and thermal suite.

Craig McAteer, Managing Director of Link4Life, said: “It really makes me proud to see the community turn out here today and the mixture of people – different age groups and profiles all really enjoying all sorts of events today.

“It’s fantastic. There are a lot of young people enjoying the facility, which is what it’s all about.”

Danni Matley, Duty Manager at the Centre, said: “It’s been a great atmosphere today, the centre is full as we expected and both children and adults are taking part and enjoying themselves.

“The resources are magnificent; it’s a lovely, bright and spacious site which can accommodate everyone in the community so everybody’s happy.”
