Wardle High School has taken part in an exciting event featuring hundreds of young brass band musicians performing for the Black Baton Relay.

Brass The Baton is a new project for 2012 that provides a unique opportunity for brass musicians, and conductors, of all ages and standards, to perform a new music commission as part of a high profile, high quality, and nationwide celebration of brass band music making for the 2012 Cultural Olympiad.

Brass The Baton is a relay race involving 5 conductor’s batons, each representing one of the 5 Olympic rings and coloured accordingly.

Starting at the European Brass Band Championships on Sunday 6 May each of the 5 batons are being passed by participating Ensembles across the UK and Internationally, until they reach the London 2012 Festival on Sunday 22 July.

Wardle High School performed 'Going the Distance' as the finale of their annual summer spectacular concert on Friday 30 June.

The 'Baton' arrived at Wardle High School from Wakefield Girls High School Brass Band who played the piece on a concert Wednesday night.

On Sunday Laura Conway from Wardle Youth Band passed over the Baton to Elland Youth Brass Band who performed the piece at the start of Brighouse March Contest.
