ReBuild will receive a share of the Community Waste Fund to pilot a furniture re-use service in Rochdale, Greater Manchester Waste Disposal Authority (GMWDA) has announced.
ReBuild currently provide a furniture re-use service in Bury and has secured this funding for a project that will deliver a pilot scheme for up to six months, to expand their collection service to parts of Rochdale.
The funding will kick start the project to enable furniture to be collected for re-use and then sold at low cost to the local community, rather than sent to landfill.
The project will also raise awareness in the community of the need to re-use, encouraging sustainable living and is a fantastic example of best practice, which can be rolled out to other community organisations.
The Community Waste Fund application process was launched in September 2010 and there was an overwhelming response from the community and voluntary sector, who submitted some fantastic and innovative ideas.
GMWDA looked for organisations that wanted to get involved in shaping and delivering much needed waste and recycling initiatives in their community, and Rebuild fitted the brief completely.
Liz Jackson, Director at ReBuild in Bury said: “We are delighted with the funding, which will enable us to expand our furniture re-use service and continue to provide local communities with much needed preloved furniture.”
PEARLS in Rochdale also received some of the funding on offer:
