Man jumps from window after police deploy taser
Date published: 18 January 2011
A man jumped from the window of a first floor flat, suffering injuries to his ankles, after police officers deployed a taser in an attempt to restrain him.
At about 11.30am on Saturday, (15 January 2011), police were called to a first floor flat on Station Road, Milnrow, following reports of a disturbance.
Officers attended and found a 40-year-old man standing at the window of the flat who has suffered cuts to his hands. He was in a highly agitated state and was threatening to harm himself and others.
Officers and family members attempted to negotiate with the man, but he refused to leave the flat. Officers forced entry and continued to negotiate with the man.
However, he remained highly agitated so officers deployed a taser in an attempt to subdue the man. He then jumped from the flat window onto the street below, suffering injuries to his ankles.
He then ran off onto Dale Street before eventually succumbing to his injuries and he was detained.
He was the taken to hospital where he was treated for suspected broken ankles, a broken wrist and a number of cuts.
Due to the police contact, the incident will be referred to Greater Manchester Police’s professional standards branch.
Officers now want to hear from anyone who witnessed the incident. Anyone with information is asked to call police on 0161 872 5050 or independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
