Date published: 12 January 2011

GCSE results in Rochdale have improved compared with the previous year according to official figures.

In terms of 5 A*-C passes including English and maths, Rochdale schools improved from 47.8% in 2009 to 51.3% in 2010.

Rochdale is just 2.1 % below the national average according to figures released by the Department for Education today (Wednesday 12 January 2011).

The Government has introduced a new measure for 2010 – the English Baccalaureate – which records broader academic performance as it covers A*-C passes in English, mathematics, two sciences, a humanity (history or geography) and a modern foreign language.

In Rochdale 6.5 % of young people achieved A* - C passes in all those areas compared with 15.6% nationally.

Sue Brown, Service Director Schools for Rochdale Borough Council said: “The confirmation that GCSE pass rates in the borough have continued to rise is fantastic news for our children and young people. I am very proud of what has been achieved in our schools and look forward to hearing of future achievements.”
