Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service are reminding people that a smoke alarm is only worth having if it works.
According to the most recent English Housing Survey nine out of ten households across the country now own a smoke alarm - up from 74 per cent in 2001. However, one in four smoke alarms fail in a house fire because it is either broken - or the most common cause - because the battery is flat or has been removed.
County Fire Officer and Chief Executive Steve McGuirk said: “We strongly advise people to test their smoke alarm every week - toxic smoke from a fire will affect your ability to breathe with just two to three breaths causing you to become unconscious - a working smoke alarm will give you the precious seconds to escape.”
Guidelines to keeping safe:
- Smoke alarms should be checked on a weekly basis and batteries should never be removed
- Don’t leave candles unattended and keep them away from flammable furnishings
- Don’t be distracted when cooking and avoid making hot food whilst under the influence of alcohol
- Plan your escape route for the event of fire and ensure all your family/guests know where the door and window keys are kept
