Campaign to help men understand depression

Date published: 12 January 2011

NHS Heywood, Middleton and Rochdale has launched a new campaign to help men understand more about depression.

The campaign plays on a number of key facts that help men to realise that depression is very common:

  • FACT - One in four of us will suffer some form of mental health problem in our lives
  • FACT - Depression and anxiety are two common mental health problems in our borough FACT - It’s not just a woman thing, as depression occurs as often in men as in women
  • FACT - Men are far less likely than women to seek help
  • FACT - Increasing unemployment and the credit crunch have a big impact on wellbeing

The campaign has been developed following discussion with men and their partners to uncover attitudes and behaviour around the subject of depression.

It is hoped the campaign will raise awareness of the signs and symptoms of mental health problems and to encourage men to recognise problems and get help when it’s needed.

NHS HMR is also targeting ladies in the campaign. Whether it's the man’s wife, partner, sister, mother or even best female friend, it's often these ladies who can spot when their man isn’t quite right and then nudge him to get help.
