Heywood has a million reasons to sing
Date published: 30 December 2010
The people of Heywood are all smiles after receiving an extra special Christmas present this year – funding to form a vocal group.
Heywood has been crying out for a choir for many years now, and at many events in and around the Heywood area, the talk of having a choir/singing group for the town is non-stop.
Thanks to funding from the Heywood Together Trust a new project called ‘A Million Reasons to Sing’ has been formed.
The project will run from 13 January 2011 and then every Thursday onwards.
Alex Cockcroft from Heywood Arts explains: “Basically the organisation, are inviting everyone and anyone from the age of 16 to come down and join in what could be the start of something truly magical. We are hoping to start a town vocal group, the reason we use vocal group as the title is to move away from the old archaic connotations that attach to the word choir. Please don’t be intimidated or scared as we need to stress that we are not claiming to be experts or professionals; we just have some experience and background with singing and want this to happen here in Heywood but we need you to come down to make this happen.
“We will be involving all that turn up in a mixture of different modern and up-beat songs. Once the group gets to know each other we can explore new songs and styles together to get to a level where we can compete (for those who want to) or just put on a show in the town.”
Mr Cockcroft added: “So if you think you have a good voice, or even if you don’t but you enjoy singing come and give it a go. More will be revealed on the night of the 13 January 07.30pm at the Heywood Sports Village Community rooms. Come along and explore with your voice, and don’t forget to bring your friends.”
