Give something back this New Year... volunteer

Date published: 30 December 2010

The Rochdale, Oldham & District Samaritans urgently need more volunteers.

If you have ever wondered what you can give back to Society for all the good things and kindnesses which have come to you, voluntary work is the answer. Join the “Big Society.”

If you have ever had help from someone who listened to your feelings and saw you through, volunteering with Samaritans could be for you.

If you are a good listener with an empathetic nature, being a Samaritan listener could be for you.

Ethel has been a Samaritans volunteer  in Rochdale for 30 years. She says that she became a Samaritan because Samaritans had helped her at a bad time in her life so she wanted to help people too and maybe ease their pain. She says that she is prepared to give her time because she knows that people need to be listened to. Ethel still feels very privileged to work with our callers and share their deepest thoughts and feelings.

Eleanor Marshall Chairwoman of the Rochdale, Oldham & District Samaritans branch, said: “The age range of our volunteers is from about 25 – 75years of age. Each volunteer gives 16 hours per 4 week period, including Christmas and New Year. The Rochdale and Oldham Branch is a friendly, hard working group to work with. Our thorough training enables us to cope with the wide variety of callers and e-mailers who seek our support.

“16,000 people contacted our small branch last year.

“There is a real need out there. At the moment there are not enough of us  to open the branch as much as we would like, so we depend on the amazing national Samaritan phone system to provide 24/7 coverage through the 200 branches. You could help to keep this branch going to support even more distressed people as they look for a way forward in their lives.”

Ms Marshall concluded: “Why not give something back? Why not enjoy the privilege of supporting people in emotional distress? Why not come and find out more about volunteering at our Information Evenings on either 11 or 19 January at 7.00pm? 5, Caton Street, Rochdale, OL16 1QJ. (01706 868686)

“We’re waiting to welcome you.”
