Large number of calls as frozen pipes thaw
Date published: 28 December 2010
Following the recent prolonged period of freezing conditions the thaw has resulted in a large number of incidents where burst pipes have resulted in loss of water supply or flooding.
In the last 24 hours Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service received 82 calls to burst pipes or flooding related incidents.
The public are requested to only call the Fire and Rescue Service in an emergency.
If a flooding occurs which places life at risk then the Fire and Rescue Service will respond to the emergency. When there is no risk to life it is usually the responsibility of the owner of the property to obtain the services of specialist trades people.
Main points if you have a burst/flood:
- Make sure you know where the stop tap is and close it fully, then open taps in kitchen and bathroom to drain the system
- Switch off central heating
- Don't touch wiring or electrics, if in doubt turn off at the mains
- Contact your insurer or an appropriate tradesperson (plumber/electrician)
