Icy weather hits bin collections

Rochdale Borough Council is apologising to those who haven’t had their bins collected before Christmas as the icy conditions continue to make it unsafe for bin collection vehicles and crews to access some streets in the borough.
Although the vast majority of properties in the borough have had their rubbish collected as scheduled, the few which the council hasn’t been able to get to this week and up to today (Friday 24 December) will next be collected week commencing 3 January – when it is next scheduled for collection.
There are no scheduled changes for bins due to be collected between Christmas and New Year, so residents should put out which ever bin is due for collection by 7am on the day collection as usual. But if your bin isn’t collected as scheduled because of the poor weather conditions – the council advises you bring it back onto your property and put it out again when it is next scheduled for collection.
Mark Widdup, Service Director for Environmental Management at Rochdale Borough Council, said: “We sincerely apologise to those whose bins we haven’t been able to collect due to the icy conditions. We’ve made every effort this week to go back and collect the backlog but because conditions haven’t improved we haven’t been able to significantly reduce the backlog.
“Between Christmas and New Year our crews will be out collecting rubbish due for collection as scheduled and will do their utmost to ensure minimum disruption is caused. However, the weather and icy conditions on ground is beyond our control, and often conditions are so severe it’s far too risky for our 26-tonne collection vehicles to access some streets. We apologise for any inconvenience incurred.”
The council will attempt to collect bins across scheduled for collection between Christmas and New Year except brown garden waste bins. Garden waste collections were suspended on 7 December until the end of February as part of the council’s efforts to save money.
Any rubbish that won’t fit in your bins can be taken to any of the three household waste recycling centres (HWRCs) in the Rochdale borough:
- Chichester Street, Rochdale OL16 2AU. Telephone 01706 643871
- Springvale, Middleton M24 2HQ. Telephone 0161 653 5271
- Peel Lane, Heywood OL10 4PR.Telephone 01706 364956
The HWRCs are open 7 days a week from 8am to 6pm except Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.
