Fines for snow covered cars is “urban myth”

Date published: 20 December 2010

Rumours are circulating that the police will be fining motorists who fail to clear the snow from their car roofs – however this is untrue.

GMP has confirmed that it will not be penalising motorists for leaving snow on the roof of their vehicle, however, the Force is calling for people to “apply common sense” when it comes to removing the snow off cars.

A spokesperson for GMP described the rumour as an “urban myth.”

However, motorists are still being urged to clear the snow from their car. Snow piled up on the roof and the bonnet could fall leading to reduced visibility for the driver of the vehicle, fall into the path of an oncoming vehicle or a pedestrian.
