Donations will bring smiles to children’s faces

Date published: 15 December 2010

For families that have taken the brave step to flee an abusive relationship this Christmas will be free from fear.

National statistics show that children are in the same room or an adjoining room during 75 per cent of domestic abuse attacks.

But, mother’s who’ve been victims of domestic abuse are facing financial problems as a result of their new found freedom and are struggling to buy presents this Christmas for their children.

Rochdale borough’s domestic abuse charity, The Women’s Omega Centre, is appealing to residents to donate any old toys, games, clothes or food that will make valuable gifts for disadvantaged families.

Kerry Reddy, Domestic Violence Coordinator and Manager of The Women’s Omega Centre, said: “I know that these are austere times but even the smallest donations are certain to bring smiles to the faces of children who otherwise might miss out this Christmas. Remember, any clothes your children might have grown out of or toys they no longer play with could be another child’s favourite Christmas present.”

All donations can be dropped off at Rochdale’s Town Hall from now (15 December) until Thursday 23 December.

Dale Mulgrew, cabinet member responsible for community safety at Rochdale Borough Council, added: “Many generous people live within our borough, so I’m appealing to everyone to support this worthwhile cause.”

One in four women will be a victim of domestic abuse. Rochdale Borough Council has joined nine other Greater Manchester local authorities, the police, the public health network, domestic abuse helpline and voluntary organisations for the second time - to support the ‘End the Fear’ Christmas campaign. This time the 'End the Fear ' campaign hopes to extend a listening ear to all the potential victims and perpetrators across Rochdale borough this Christmas.
