Young hair and beauty students receive award

Date published: 13 December 2010

A group of 15 and 16 year olds from Hopwood Hall College have been named ‘Student Group of the Month’ for taking on a challenge that even adults would struggle to do.

The youngsters are studying for the Higher Diploma in Hair and Beauty Studies and are in their second year.

A few weeks ago, their tutor Becki Lee discussed 'Children in Need' and asked for their ideas to raise money. To her surprise, they not only came up with ideas but immediately started to work as a team, distributing job roles and pulled together a full day of events - putting their maths, English and ICT skills into practice.

The 15 and 16 year ran a stall all day; from selling raffle tickets, writing letters, planning lunches, to providing nail art, hair and face painting - every student in the group got involved.

Mrs Lee said: “They worked their socks off to raise £140. What a fantastic result. I nominated them for this award, because not only have they done all of this, but they have shown just how much they have progressed from starting the course last year. What a group - well done to them all.”

Their hard work paid off and the College named them as ‘Student Group of the Month’; each of the group members received a certificate and £50 was transferred to the curriculum area for the group to spend in consultation with their tutor.
