Students name their own salon

A salon that had no name has finally been given the perfect identity thanks to one of Hopwood Hall College’s 14-16 year old Higher Diploma Hair and Beauty students.

Two Rochdale schools, Holy Family and Siddal Moor, have recently invested in a purpose-built, modern hair and beauty salon; the salon gives students the opportunity to enroll on hair and beauty vocational courses that are delivered by Hopwood Hall College.

In order to share the new salon with the community, the staff wanted to plan a launch. However, before a launch could be organised, a name for the salon was needed.

This is where the learners became involved and put their learning into practice. The learners participating in the course were set the challenge of creating a name and logo for their new salon. When all the entries were received, a voting system was put into action. Over 60 people voted; these included staff, council officials, visitors and also hair and beauty practitioners.

The winning logo and name was designed by year 10 student Ellie Williams, from Siddal Moor School, who is studying for the Higher Diploma Hair and Beauty.

‘The Style Cabin@Holy Family High School’ is being digitally recreated to be used across all of the salon promotional material and stationary. It will also be made up into the salon signage and take pride of place on the front of the salon. Not only that, Ellie won a pair of hair straighteners as an added bonus.

Another award was made to Beth Sedgley, also from Siddal Moor School, for her entry, which came very a very close second.

Hopwood Hall College’s Diploma Programme Director, Becki Lee said “Part of the reason we decided to let the learners select the name was to make them feel part of the salon and embed learning that has taken place regarding branding and salon image.

“There were some fabulously creative and unique ideas put forward, that were of a really high standard therefore the voting system was the only fair way of selecting a winner. When announced, the learners that entered were all pleased as at last our salon had a name! Now the name has been selected, we can begin planning our official launch, so watch this space.”
