Passengers advised to expect more snow overnight

Date published: 30 November 2010

Passengers are being advised that bus services are likely to be disrupted into the evening and into tomorrow (Wednesday 1 December 2010) morning in light of forecast snow showers.

Bus operators have today reported of some disruption to services in north east Greater Manchester – mainly Rochdale, Oldham and Tameside – and the MET office has forecast further snow showers overnight and into Wednesday morning.

Michael Renshaw, GMPTE's Bus and Rail Director, said: “The vast majority of bus services have been operating well today, although passengers will be experiencing some delays and some services have been running on revised routes because of the road conditions.

“In areas where roads and estates are not being served, mainly in the north east of Greater Manchester, passengers are advised to walk to the nearest main road to catch a bus.

“Rail and Metrolink have not experienced any significant disruption to date, although longer distance train services, particularly from the north east of England, have been experiencing delays because of the weather conditions in that area.

“If the forecast snow showers come, it is likely that bus services will be affected in the evening and early in the morning. Passengers should, where possible, keep up with weather bulletins, check their operator’s website before travelling and allow extra time for their journeys.”

Greater Manchester’s Traveline service handled more than 1,100 calls between 7am and 3pm today – almost twice as many calls as an average 13-hour day. Despite this, staff still managed to answer almost 90 per cent of calls.
