Hundreds attend Littleborough Christmas lights switch on

Hundreds of people packed into the Littleborough square this evening (Saturday 27 November 2010) for the Christmas lights switch on and the Lancashire Day celebrations.

Families enjoyed a selection of festive songs played by the Littleborough Public Brass Band before the reading of the Lancashire Proclamation.

Following the reading 11-year-old Emily Aspinal, from Smithybridge Primary School, flicked the switch for the Christmas lights.

Emily was the winner of the Littleborough Lion's peace poster competition.

The Mayor of Rochdale, Councillor Zulfiqar Ali and Miss Rochdale, Frankie Whitworth attended the event.

Children enjoyed fun fair rides, candy floss and a visit from Father Christmas!

Steve Lister from LEAF (Littleborough Events and Associations Forum) who organised the event, said: “Tonight is just fantastic. It is what LEAF and the people of Littleborough are about – joining in a fabulous community event.”

Mayor Ali added: “It is nice to see parents and children enjoying themselves. My thanks go to the organisers for putting on a wonderful evening.”

Councillor Janet Darnbrough said: “I think it is brilliant the way the community has come together. The atmosphere is lovely. I think there are more people here than in previous years and it is great to see so many children around.”

Miss Rochdale, Frankie Whitworth, described the event as “very Christmassy.”

She said: “It is lovely. It is nice to see so many people here and having a nice time, I’m having a nice time too – everyone is getting into the Christmas spirit.”
