Strathclyde police welcome Manchester United fans

Date published: 23 November 2010

Tomorrow (Wednesday 24 November 2010), Rangers take on Manchester United at Ibrox Stadium, Glasgow, in the UEFA Champions League.

Strathclyde Police today issued travel and safety advice to the thousands of fans, in particular the 2400 Manchester United fans, some of who may be making the trip north of the border for the first time.

As with any major event, public safety is paramount. High visibility policing and additional patrols in and around the city centre will help these events pass safely, allowing revellers to enjoy themselves.

Assistant Chief Constable Campbell Corrigan, Territorial Policing, is the senior officer in charge. He said:"We know just over 2400 tickets have been allocated to the travelling fans. Strathclyde Police is experienced in policing large events safely and securely, and this game is no different. These tickets will be issued only at the designated supporter’s area which has been set up at the Old Fruitmarket in Glasgow’s Merchant City. We will be issuing a leaflet accompanying the tickets making fans aware of arrangements and local by-laws. There will be restaurants and bars offering a range of refreshments in a safe and secure environment. From 1730 hours, buses will be provided to convey supporters to Ibrox Stadium.”

ACC Corrigan continued:"I would like to point out some of the different laws in place in Scotland with regard to drinking alcohol in public places and remind fans that alcohol and controlled containers of any kind are not allowed in the stadium.

"Drinking or carrying alcohol on buses to and from the event is against the law. It is not only the person found in possession of alcohol that runs the risk of being charged - the hirer of the bus, the driver and the company are all liable.

"That all said, I hope everyone has a great time. Our officers are there to help and to ensure a safe and secure atmosphere, so if anybody requires advice or assistance, Strathclyde Police is there to help."

All supporters are reminded that anybody arrested for offences of a serious nature, particularly racist or sectarian offences, will be the subject of an application for a football banning order.

Manchester United fans should also be aware that they will be asked to remain within their seated section for a short period after the match. This is a safety precaution to allow the safe passage of all fans away from the stadium. All away supporters who travelled by coach will be collected by their coaches, located in the away car park at Ibrox Stadium.
