Experts at the Health Protection Agency (HPA) North West are encouraging people who are most at risk of pneumonia to ensure that they have the protection of pneumococcal vaccine.
The pneumococcal vaccine, also known as the pneumo jab, protects against a range of pneumococcal illnesses such as pneumonia, meningitis and septicaemia (blood poisoning). These serious infections can sometimes be described as invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD).
People aged 65 and over, the very young and anyone with a long-term health condition, such as heart, lung or kidney disease or a weakened immune system are more at risk of IPD.
HPA North West consultant Dr Sam Ghebrehewet said: “IPD can cause serious illness, particularly in young children and the elderly. Pneumococcal infections are responsible for about one third of pneumonia cases acquired in the community and we see more cases during the winter months. In some cases, severe pneumococcal infection can be fatal.
“That is why we’re urging anyone who is at an increased risk from this disease to make sure they’re vaccinated as soon as possible. The vaccine is safe and can be given at anytime of the year or even alongside the seasonal flu jab.”
The vaccine is recommended for all individuals aged 65 years and over and those aged 2 - 64 years who are at increased risk of developing IPD. Most people only need the vaccine once in their lifetime but some individuals who have a chronic kidney condition or if their spleen does not work properly should have booster doses every five years.
Professor Qutub Syed, Director, HPA North West, said: “If you are in an at risk group, my advice, especially at this time of year, is to visit your local GP surgery and get the vaccination as soon as possible. It’s the best way to protect yourself against pneumococcal infections is to get immunised.”
