MEP calls for cyclists to protect themselves

Date published: 13 November 2010

Euro MP Paul Nuttall has called for cyclists to protect themselves – and other road users.

"The nights are drawing in now that the clocks have gone back and I appeal to all cyclists to be ultra-vigilant, not just for themselves but for everyone else using the roads," said Mr Nuttall.

"It is a sad fact that far too many cyclists do not have lights on their machines and though it is an offence very few get stopped by the police for riding in the dark without them.

"The cyclist may be able to see where he is going but motorists and pedestrians, particularly the elderly, cannot see them until the last minute - and that may be too late to avert an accident," said Mr Nuttall, MEP for the UK Independence Party.

"It is obviously a good thing that more people are leaving their vehicles at home and riding bikes for transport and pleasure but they must be danger aware.

"It used to be that when a bicycle was bought, particularly for young people, it came with lights, both front and rear, but no longer so and nor does it come with a bell.

"And frequently those who ride without lights and put themselves most at risk also do not wear a helmet and further increase their chance of serious injury or death.

"I know in these difficult times that everyone is counting their pennies but you cannot put a price on life and so I urge all cyclists, and the parents of younger riders, to ensure they are as safe as they can possibly be, especially in the dark," said Mr Nuttall.
