Tree collapses on Rochdale house in high winds

Date published: 12 November 2010

High winds caused a tree to fall on a house in Balderstone in the early hours of this morning.

The tree fell onto a bedroom extension on Crompton Avenue at around 4am, damaging the roof and a satellite dish.

Carol Bull, who lives at the house, said she and her husband were woken by the noise of the tree hitting the house.

“It was a bit of a nasty shock,” said Mrs Bull. “We are a bit worried about a few of the other trees on the road falling down because they could hit the car at the front of the house.”

The tree was partially leaning on a post at the entrance of the garden and Mrs Bull said the damage would have been far worse if the post had not been there.

Mrs Bull called the Council at around 7.30am, who sent round a team to clear up the mess.

Although there was no damage done to the inside of the house, the tree put a large hole in the roof of the ground floor extension and the dish is in need of replacing.

Mrs Bull said: “The dish company didn’t know what to do because they have never had a tree fall on one before.”

Winds of up to 80mph have caused damage across the borough in the last 24 hours.

In Bosworth Square a tree fell onto a parked car and another was uprooted on Sandy Lane, Spotland.

Andrew Quinn, Rochdale Council Arboricultural Supervisor, said the council has two teams and three inspectors out trying to prioritise the clear up and deal with the damage.
Mr Quinn said: “I think we will be on the job until next week cleaning up the mess.”
