Two minute silence to remember lives lost at war
Date published: 11 November 2010
The people of Rochdale came together today (Thursday 11 November 2010) to pay their respects to those who died in service of their country.
As the Town Hall clock bells sounded at 11.00am a two minute silence began followed by music from the Wardle High School band and a short service led by Canon Alan Shackleton.
Representatives from the fire service, the police force and Rochdale Council were amongst the visitors who surrounded the Rochdale Cenotaph this morning.
Following the service, the Mayor of Rochdale, Councillor Zulfiqar Ali said: “I think it is really nice to see that more and more people are participating especially on this day, time and date to pay their respects for those who gave their lives for our future and security and remember those who are still suffering in conflicts and wars. I hope the light of peace will shine one day.”
The Deputy Leader of Rochdale Council, Councillor Ashley Dearnley added: “Once again it is good to see more people here. It was a very moving and respectful service and it is appropriate to continue to do this.”
Small wooden crosses bearing poppies were placed into the ground by the side of the cenotaph following the service.
