North-West Euro-MP Paul Nuttall has been appointed as deputy leader of the UK Independence Party.
He was chosen by his party’s new leader, Nigel Farage, and approved by his national executive in London last night.
He said: “This is a great honour which I was happy to accept, particularly at such a very exciting time for UKIP.
“Nigel Farage comprehensively won the leadership contest on Friday and we have a very busy time ahead of us.
“The political parties have never been more out of touch with public opinion. Patriotic old Labour voters have known this for a long time.
“The traditional Liberals are also finding it hard to recognise what the Liberal Democrats have become. Patriotic eurosceptic Tories are beginning to realise that under David Cameron and William Hague their party has ceased to exist.
“Only UKIP is fighting for the majority of people in this country who want a referendum on the EU.
“But we are not just about withdrawal from the EU, we have a whole raft of sound domestic policies. We believe being firm but fair on immigration, zero tolerance on crime and no tax on minimum wage.”
