Co-operative Milnrow Band annual ball

Date published: 09 November 2010

The Co-operative Milnrow Band Annual Ball was held at Milnrow Cricket Club on Saturday 6 November 2010. In keeping with the theme “Hollywood” red carpet, film associated table dressings “popping” flash bulbs and “eye catching females” were well in evidence at the band ball and presentation evening at Milnrow Cricket Club on Saturday 6 November 2010.

The annual “do” was once again organised by Adie Connell and lady members of the band, and having dispensed with the constraints of the formal band uniform they
proved that any one of them could give their filmstar counterparts “a run for their money” attired as they were in a sumptuous variety of glamourous gowns.

Compere for the evening was Louise Plant. Some “tongue in cheek Oscars” were presented to members of the band. Mike Thewlis (Baritone) received an Oscar for “Best odd job and do anything person” and John Connell (Percussion) received his Oscar for “Best teller of tales”, tall or otherwise.

Proceedings commenced at 7.30pm and staff of local “First Choice Caterers” were on hand to serve those present with a main course consisting of various roast meats and vegetables, followed by an apple dessert, thought by most to be almost “fit to die for”.

Almost non stop entertainment for the evening was provided by a great ten piece live soul/rock band “Soul Provider”, a combination fronted by three vocalists and guitar with accompanying “figures” provided by a back line of brass and reeds.

A short interval gave opportunity for both band and dancers to recuperate and allowed the presentation of awards for the year.

  • BAND PERSON OF THE YEAR: Frances Thewlis (Band Manager) received the Rose Bowl
  • MOST IMPROVED PLAYER: Owen Middlemass (Percussionist and youngest member) received the Arthur Bailey Trophy
  • PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Donna Towse (Principal Cornet) was awarded the Marian and Richard Hodgson Memorial Trophy.

A raffle raised almost £200 and the following local establishments were publically thanked for their contributions:- Milnrow Balti, Aura Health and Beauty (Littleborough), John Milne Hotel, Liam`s Quality Meats (Littleborough), Committee of Milnrow Cricket Club and of course “The Co-operative”.

This most enjoyable annual event was obviously greatly appreciated by those present, especially by the executives on the appropriately titled “The God Father” table.
