Skateboard training sessions a hit with youngsters

Skateboard training sessions held at the Backdoor Music Project are proving a hit with youngsters from Rochdale.

Today (Saturday 6 November 2010) the Backdoor Music Project, based in the Broadwater Centre on Smith Street, was transformed with skate ramps and protective mats.

Youngsters armed with their skateboards, helmets and pads, took part in the two hour session – and it seems it is worth getting up for on a Saturday morning.

Instructor Jonathan Brenner said: “None of these kids know each other but they are all working as a group. This is a facility where they can learn and have fun. We are giving them a bit of help and a start by teaching them to ride safely then they can go to a skate park and have a good time.”

The sessions started this year and run every other Saturday. Mr Brenner is hoping soon Rochdale will have its own skate park for the youngsters to go to.

“The response has been really good,” said Mr Brenner, “It is a small space and we have limited time but they are enjoying it. They wouldn’t keep coming back if they didn’t.”

Sonia Lukash from the Backdoor Music Project said: “They are building relationships and learning to respect each other whilst learning and having fun.”

11-year-old Ryan Webb said: “I think its fun; I wish it was on every week!”

Rhys Hopwood, also 11 said: “It is awesome. I come every week it is on.”
