Rochdale recongised for wonder-ful landmarks

Date published: 03 November 2010

Two Rochdale landmarks are in the running to be named one of the ‘Ten Wonders of Greater Manchester’, following their inclusion in a shortlist of best loved locations, as chosen by residents from across the region’s boroughs.

Images of Cheesden Mill and Rochdale Town hall will now face fierce competition from other popular local attractions, including Old Trafford, Victoria Baths and the Imperial War Museum North, in a public vote to find the top ten ‘wonders’ of the region.

The well-loved locations were amongst hundreds of suggestions, from libraries and pubs, to museums and football stadiums, submitted to the System One Travelcards ‘Wonders of Greater Manchester’ Facebook page.

The company is now urging residents to get behind their local landmarks by voting for their top five ‘wonders’ of the region.

The final 15 were whittled down from over 100 submissions by a panel of judges, comprised of Allie Johns, from System One Travelcards, Tariq Ahmed from the
Community Foundation for Greater Manchester, B Hunter from Go See This, and leading photographer, Luke Cannon.

The shortlisted images, which were submitted by both amateur and professional photographers, were selected by the panel for their historical, cultural and aesthetic significance to each area, and importance to Greater Manchester as a region.

The fifteen finalists now facing the public vote are:

  • Media City
  • John Rylands Library
  • Whitworth Park
  • Salford Quays Millennium Footbridge
  • Victoria Baths
  • Peace Garden Statue
  • Imperial War Museum North
  • Chetham Library
  • Astley Green Colliery
  • Cheesden Mill
  • Urbis
  • Old Trafford
  • Rochdale Town Hall
  • Spinningfields
  • Scouthead

Allie Johns, from System One Travelcards, said: “Rochdale contains a fantastic mix of hidden beauty spots, such as Cheesden Mill, and imposing urban landmarks, such as Rochdale Town Hall.

“We’d like local people to celebrate these incredible landmarks and get voting for them to be recognised as some of the ‘Ten Wonders of Greater Manchester.’”

The deadline for voting is midnight on Friday 12 November after which the ‘Ten Wonders of Greater Manchester’ will be announced. The person who submitted the ‘wonder’ coming in first place will win a System One goody bag and an annual travel pass worth over £600. Five runners up will be rewarded with a goody bag and month
travel pass, and the remaining four finalists will receive a goody bag and day travel pass.
