Ladies join forces to look after Hollingworth Lake

Date published: 30 October 2010

Keen volunteers gave up their afternoon today (Saturday 30 October 2010) to tidy up the path around Hollingworth Lake.

The clean up was held as part of ‘Make a Difference Day’ and five ladies from across the borough joined ranger Peter Hill to carry out litter picking on the route around the lake.

Armed with bin liners and litter pickers the volunteers set off from the visitors centre at 1.30pm.

On their way around the lake they came across various items of litter. Despite the blustery weather the ladies all got stuck in and were keen to keep the lake tidy.

Ranger Peter Hill said: “As part of Make a Difference Day we wanted to do something to help tidy the lake up and it is nice to see members of the community here and willing to help.

“Litter is a problem here. We have two organised clean ups like this throughout the year but each day we are picking litter up.

“Today encourages people to get involved and become interested in the lake.”

Mr Hill continued: “The message really is to bag it and take it home or use the bins provided.

“It is a nice enough day and it is a pleasure to have the volunteers here. It is always pleasing no matter how many people turn up because we are getting out and getting the job done.”

Green Volunteer Christine Winn said: “I like to see the lake clean and tidy. Obviously if people didn’t drop litter then we wouldn’t need to be here. But it is nice to do my bit and then it can be appreciated by everybody.

“As a visitor of the lake I want to see it tidy.”
