Family fun at the Backdoor Music Project

Date published: 30 October 2010

Families from Rochdale enjoyed an afternoon of fun and entertainment today (Saturday 30 October 2010) at the Backdoor Music Project.

Over the half term week young people have been making various arts and crafts to sell in the hope of raising some funds to put back into the centre.

So today, the Backdoor Music Project, based on Smith Street, was opened to the public to raise awareness of what is on offer.

The arts and crafts made by the volunteers were available to buy, face painting and craft making was also on offer and the stage was there for anybody wanting to get up and perform.

Jackie Stewart, Volunteer Co-ordinator at Backdoor said: “The young people have put this together as part of Make a Difference Day. They have been working all week making arts and crafts – this is a project we are hoping to develop.

“Today is to give people a chance to come in and do different things, to have a look at what we do, or to get up on the stage.”

Ms Stewart added: “This is the first time we have done something like this but we are hoping to continue it. It has been a fun day and we have had a great response. The money will go back into the arts and craft project.”

Of course youngsters visiting the centre didn’t shy away from getting up on stage and various acts of all ages performed, including Rochdale’s Got Talent finalist Courtney Cecere.

Artist Charlotte Cass worked with the young people throughout the week, she said: “We made things with the idea to sell them. The aim was to break down those barriers to getting into businesses and give people hope and passion. Everyone has been enthusiastic. We are also going to have the crafts on a market stall and that is something we hope to carry on.

"There is so much talent in Rochdale and we want to get people in here and see what is going on.

“There has been a great sense of community spirit today and it has all been fun.”
