“Keep warm, keep well” says NHS

Date published: 28 October 2010

“Keep warm, keep well” is the latest message from NHS Heywood, Middleton and Rochdale (HMR) now that the cold days and nights have arrived.

Cold weather can lead to serious health problems such as heart attacks, strokes, pneumonia and depression and can be particularly dangerous for older people and those who are more vulnerable to cold-related illnesses, including people with long term conditions.

“With the temperatures dropping, we are much more likely to catch colds and flu, so we must make sure we keep ourselves as healthy as possible,” explains Dr Sheila Will, Health Protection Consultant in Public Health at NHS HMR.

“Living a healthy lifestyle by eating and drinking healthily, taking regular exercise and wrapping up warm when going out, will all help towards keeping you warm and well through the colder months.

In partnership with Rochdale Borough Council and other local organisations, NHS HMR want the public to have a safe and enjoyable winter. Here’s a few tips to help you out:

1. Heat your home well - By setting your heating to the right temperature (between 18–21°C or 64–70°F), you can still keep your home warm and lower your bills. If you feel cold at night, use a hot water bottle or electric blanket – but never use both together.

2. Get financial support - There are grants, benefits and sources of advice available to make your home more energy efficient, improve your heating or help with bills.

3. Eat well - Food is a vital source of energy, which helps to keep your body warm. Try to make sure you and your family have hot meals and drinks regularly throughout the day.

4. Get a seasonal flu jab - If you’re aged over 65, or you or your children have a long-term health condition, you can get a free jab from your GP to protect against seasonal flu strains.

5. Look after yourself and others - Remember to wrap up warm if you need to go outside on cold days. If you have an older neighbour or relative, look out for them during winter to make sure they are safe and well.
