Armed robbery at Heywood store

Date published: 25 October 2010

Police are hunting armed robbers who held up a Heywood shop.

At about 10pm on Thursday (21 October 2010), two men carrying a knife and an axe entered the Co-Operative Food Store on Sutherland Road.

The men threatened staff and forced them to hand over cash and cigarettes before possibly getting into a vehicle, which drove off towards Argyle Street. This vehicle had been parked at the back of the Highlander pub.

No-one was hurt but staff were left shocked by what happened.

The offenders were described as being white, in their 20's and one was slim while the other had a medium build.

Detective Constable Janice Cruttwell, said: “No-one should ever be subjected to this level of violence while doing their job.

“I want to reassure the staff that we are taking this very seriously and are confident of catching these desperate criminals.

“If anyone saw anything suspicious, particularly a car being driven away from the scene, then I would urge them to get in touch.”
