Twenty-three people have been arrested as part of an operation to tackle burglary across the Pennines area.

Officers from the Pennine Neighbourhood Policing Team have carried out a number of warrants and stop searches supported by policing units from across Rochdale. Patrols have been increased at burglary hotspots in Smallbridge, Milnrow and Newhey.

Due to the success of the initiative, launched in August, it will now continue into the New Year.

Crime prevention clinics were also held to provide tips to the public on how to protect themselves from would-be criminals and letters have been issued to residents to let them know that burglars are operating in their area. It provides advice on how to keep their homes safe.

Inspector Jamie Collins for Pennine Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: "It is great to see that the hard work of our officers is paying off however we will not rest on our laurels. It is important for residents and offenders to know that we are continuing this initiative into the New Year. I would like to send a clear message to offenders in the Pennine area that my team are actively targeting you and if you are arrested and charged with a burglary offence we will work with other agencies to make sure you are held accountable for your crimes.

“As part of our new service promise we will continue to tackle the problems identified by you and ensure you get the best possible service. It is important to ensure our work continues.

“Can I recommend that residents follow a few simple security measures before going to bed. Make sure your vehicle is securely locked and alarmed and that all valuables have been removed at night. Remember insecure vehicles and properties are the ideal target for thieves in our community.

“Never leave car or house keys near window sills or in porches or hallways and put them as well as any valuables away and out of sight. Be vigilant, if you see anything suspicious contact the police immediately. If you don’t secure your home you are not only leaving yourself vulnerable to burglars, but you may also be invalidate any insurance claim.”

Police are encouraging residents to register and property and mark any valuables to ensure they can be returned if lost or stolen.

By registering valuables on www.immobilise.com owners can put details of their prized possessions on a national database that police can access and compare against items that have been found or recovered from suspected criminals. The online service is totally free and is quick and easy to use.
