Albert Royds Street to re-open ahead of schedule

Date published: 21 October 2010

Clover Hall Bridge on Albert Royds Street in Belfield, Rochdale is to reopen to traffic from Monday (25 October) – a week ahead of schedule.

The bridge carries vehicles using the A664 Albert Royds Street over the Rochdale to Leeds railway and has been replaced to ensure a safer and stronger bridge, capable of withstanding heavy traffic. It is also wider than the old bridge, allowing wider footpaths for pedestrians.

John Ashley, a Bridge Engineer with Impact Partnership said: “The old Clover Hall Railway Bridge had certainly seen better days and was showing signs of significant wear and tear. Replacing the bridge has been a complicated but successful project, and we and our partners are pleased to be able to re-open it ahead of schedule.”

“We would like to thank local residents, businesses, drivers and pedestrians for their patience during the two months that the bridge has been closed.”

The bridge work has been a team effort with Impact Partnership – a joint venture between Rochdale Metropolitan Borough Council and consulting company Mouchel – managing the project, working closely with Balfour Beatty, Network Rail and the utility companies.

Before the bridge is fully finished, further works are needed to re-route the pavements and utility services, and to lay the permanent road surface. In order for this work to be carried out, occasional temporary traffic lights and two weekend closures are expected between now and the end of January.
