Crime down in Rochdale

Date published: 19 October 2010

Crime has been reduced by 15 per cent in Rochdale thanks to a clampdown on offenders.

Figures show that between 1 April and 30 September 2010 there were 1743 fewer victims of crime across the borough, when compared to the same period the previous year.

Communities across the area have also seen a 17 per cent reduction in vehicle crime, 42 per cent reduction in violence, 12 per cent reduction in antisocial behaviour and 20 per cent drop in criminal damage.

A series of policing initiatives and the targeting of known offenders has helped produce this result. This included increased patrols in our problem areas at the times identified by the public, visits to the homes in areas affected by crime and issuing crime prevention leaflets. Youth services were also offering youngsters alternative activities to take part in as part of the Safe4Summer campaign during the summer break.

Chief Superintendent John O’Hare, said: “Our officers have been working really hard over recent months to bring crime down and to see that this resulted in fewer victims is great. We know that the coming months will be hard but I would like to remind everyone that we will not rest on our laurels.

“Our new service promise outlines our commitment to continue tackling the problems as identified by you and to work with communities to provide the best possible service. It is important to ensure our work continues and to see more of the criminals pay the price of their crime.

“However, we can’t achieve these results on our own. Can I remind residents on the importance of securing all windows and doors even when you are in your home.

“Our research shows that one in three burglaries happen as a result of people leaving their windows open like this and by taking these simple precautions you can prevent yourself from being a victim of crime.

“To help us reduce burglary switch on a light, and turn a burglar off as burglars target dark homes. Also remember alarms, locks and lights as homes are still targeted by offenders even at this time of the year.”

Operation Banchee was launched on 20 August to address concerns over burglary across the Division. Since its launch the team have arrested a number of prolific burglary offenders for crimes committed. This initiative will continue into the New Year and we are hopeful that it will help in reducing this area of crime.

During the summer period Operation Quasar was also in place. This was the Division’s response to antisocial behaviour during the summer period. It saw neighbourhood officers increase patrols in hotspot areas and was supported by Youth Services and Community Safety Officers who would help usher young people to a range of activities available to them over the holiday period.

Chief Supt O’Hare added: “The initiative helped reduce antisocial behaviour over the summer break by 34 per cent which was a great result for everyone. By having our officers in key locations as identified by you we have been able to bring down this crime and make the period a safe and happy time for everyone.”
